Eli Robert Cortinas
With crushed hearts, and tears, we are forced to let you know that Eli passed away yesterday evening. Lys and Ted will need time alone to grieve, and have asked for no phone calls or visitors for a bit. Please do not be offended if you did not recieve a phone call. This has been unimaginably difficult. Service details will be shared when details are confirmed.
Our precious sister and Ted will need our support more than ever and we thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Two Weeks Old Today
Lys and Ted want you to know that they have results from the neurological testing. Scans show significant damage to Eli's brain. Doctors are testing Eli's limits to see what his abilities are in reference to breathing and swallowing.
This has been devastating news, and they are having a difficult time dealing with this.
For the time being Lys and Ted have requested no phone calls or visitors.
Please keep them in your prayers during this difficult time as Lys and Ted's emotions are fragile. Please also pray for wisdom for the doctors as they determine Eli's care.
Because of their need for privacy right now, we may not have as many updates for you.

Setback
We are loath to inform you all that Eli started seizing last night, and some today also. This has been a setback to his progress, and tests have been run to determine what is going on. We are hoping to have results of those tests by tomorrow. Because of this development, his oxygen levels are higher than they were, but his blood pressure has remained stable. He also has developed an infection, and is being treated with antibiotics for that.
Baby Eli has made some good progress, being moved to a standard ventilator, and off the blood pressure medications, and we are trying to focus on that good progress overall. Lys was able to wash his hair today after a "goopy" test, and change a few diapers... moments she is treasuring. We pray to give you all a better report tomorrow...
Love,
Auntie Jess

Mmmmm Milk
On the back of a great day and night, Doctors decided a couple things yesterday. One they were going to attempt to let Eli breath on his own, and two, he was going to start getting a bit of mama's milk. The milk seems to be going well so far, and Lys is excited to see Eli getting some use out of her hard work. It makes it feel even more worth her waking up several times at night to pump.
Eli did not breath on his own without the ventilator, however, so he was re intubated, and they adjusted the ventilator this morning so he could take more practice breaths on his own. We are hoping he does well with this, so they can try again soon.
He is still off all blood pressure medication, a major step in the right direction!! Some of his IV's were moved around, we are still waiting with baited breath for Lys to be able to hold her son.
Prognosis: We still don't know! Doctors have worked hard to get Eli's blood pressure stable, are working towards getting him off the ventilator, and feeding him. There will most likely be more neurological tests. I am told that at this time they don't see anything wrong with his heart. Ted said that while they still consider him critical, he is doing much better and they don't consider him to be as critical as a few days ago. So we will take each baby step forward with joy, and hold Lys and Ted in our hearts as they slowly get to play a larger role in El's care.

All we want for Christmas is...to hold our baby boy!
Today has been a good day! After a rough night, Eli is now off one of the medications for his blood pressure and the other medication is set at "medium-low". This is a big step in his recovery! His oxygen levels are fluctuating slightly but close to normal room air. The doctor even mentioned that if he maintains his current progress, we could be looking at getting him off the ventilator entirely as early as tomorrow! He will still need oxygen, but is breathing fairly well and they believe he won't need much assistance very soon! Eli does not like much commotion (sounds, lights, etc) and the nurse today gave him a binky instead of sedating him, which worked! Who would have thought that something so simple would be effective! She also placed some blankets and beanbag-type things on his body to help settle him down after he got aggitated. We were very thankful that these methods worked and he did not need to be sedated! Eli is also opening his eyes more and more. He was awake and looking around for quite a while this afternoon, which was very exciting! He is responding to both Ted's and my voices and that warms our hearts. Once his blood pressure is under control, they will begin feeding him (slowly), which will put us that much closer to taking him home! It is still a ways off, but we're starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Please continue to pray for little Eli. He is in God's hands and we are trusting that he will be healed in God's timing.
We can't even begin to express how thankful we are for the love and support. We have enjoyed some wonderful, nutritious meals and are so thankful for the generous financial assistance. It is so nice not to worry about those things and to be able to focus our time and energy on Eli. He knows when we're with him and the nurses have noticed that also. Staying at the Ronald McDonald house has been such a blessing to us as well. They let us know today that all our rooms have been paid for for 3 nights by a very generous donor. Everywhere we turn, we are feeling blessed and thankful. We could not have imagined such an outpouring of love from our wonderful family and friends. We have so much to be thankful for, even in this difficult time.
Much love,
Lys, Ted & Eli

Fluctuations
A quick note... Eli's blood pressure and oxygen levels have continued to fluctuate overnight and this morning. We are so excited with each positive and forward step, but need to continue to be patient as Doctors attempt to figure out why things are not working perfectly. There will be great days like yesterday, which makes any backstep feel worse. We will just wait for another great day!!
Lys experienced a special moment last night, while talking to Eli, he opened his eyes and looked at her for a bit. A moment so many of us may have taken for granted with our own children. She was definitely in great spirits last night!!
We can't say thank you enough for all the meals!! Virginia is delivering them today, and we know this will take one small thing off Lys and Ted's mind as they wait by Eli's side.
Much love,
Auntie Jess
